When moving to France, one final element is to plan far in advance.  Springing such a move on anyone would be difficult.  It takes time and effort to file the correct paperwork, prepare for moving, consult with a real estate agent, and so forth.  There are many details to attend to, and you must give yourself plenty of time to plan ahead.  Also, when children are involved, the more time that they have for planning and preparation is better.  They need to prepare just as much as you do, simply in different ways.
